Celebrating the Women of AKD.
Throughout March for International Women’s Day, we’re shining a spotlight on some of the women at AKD and the contributions they make as valued members of team orange.

Dimi Hughes – National IT Project Manager
As National IT Project Manager, Dimi Hughes plays a key role in delivering IT projects that drive efficiency and modernize practices across AKD. Based in North Lakes, QLD, she has been with the company for two years, implementing structured project management methodologies that ensure projects stay on time, on budget, and within scope.
Dimi was drawn to the ever-evolving nature of the IT industry, where no two days are the same. “The IT industry offers me continuous change and challenges. Just when you have perfected the technology currently in use, you have to retrain, learn, and roll out new technologies.”
Throughout her career, she has seen progress in gender diversity and recognizes AKD as a workplace where women are given opportunities to succeed. While she has encountered moments where industry language doesn’t always reflect inclusivity, she actively encourages positive change. “Some colleagues are more willing to move on from these [terms] than others when I have presented alternatives.”
One of her proudest achievements has been introducing structured project methodologies at AKD. “I can see the difference project methods I have introduced in our business areas make to the success of IT projects.” She has also explored AI in project management, applying it where it can enhance efficiency.
Dimi appreciates AKD’s investment in her development, particularly through supporting her professional qualifications and including her in the LEAD training program, which she found incredibly valuable.
Her advice to women considering a career in IT? “The industry offers many opportunities for women. Skills like organization, problem-solving, and collaboration are essential in IT, and if you can add value, opportunities will come.”
Danielle Smith – Yarram Loader Operator

Danielle Smith’s career path is one of growth, determination, and embracing new opportunities. Having spent most of her working life in hospitality, she was ready for a change when she joined AKD 2.5 years ago. Now a Loader Operator at the Yarram site, she’s proving that with persistence and a willingness to learn, new career paths can be both rewarding and fulfilling.
“What makes me proud is to just push myself daily to see what I can achieve,” Danielle shares. Taking on a role in an industry that was completely new to her, she faced challenges early on, particularly when learning to operate heavy machinery.
“When I first started driving the forklift, I had a few challenges. I didn’t think I would get better, but I stuck by it and now feel quite confident.”
Danielle credits AKD for giving her opportunities to develop her skills and expand her understanding of the business. She has worked across different departments, gaining experience and building confidence in her role.
Beyond personal growth, Danielle has also noticed a positive shift in workplace diversity. “I have seen a lot of progress over the years I have worked for AKD. I’ve witnessed a more open and supportive environment, where women are not only accepted but encouraged to thrive.”
Her advice to other women considering a career in the industry? “Stay persistent, continuously look for opportunities to learn more, and embrace any challenge as a learning experience.”
Kavitha Ponneelan – National Business Analyst

As a Business Analyst in AKD’s finance team, Kavitha plays a crucial role in financial modelling, reporting, and market analysis. By examining economic trends and industry data, she provides key insights that help AKD identify opportunities, assess risks, and make informed strategic decisions.
Her journey at AKD is one of growth and determination. Starting in an administrative role in 2017, she has progressed to a position where her analysis influences business decisions. “The responsibility I hold now is something I deeply value, especially when it comes to writing professional, detailed reports in my second language, English. It’s a reminder of how much I’ve grown in a new country I now call home.”
Kavitha was inspired to pursue a career in the timber industry by a combination of factors – AKD’s strong support system, her eagerness to learn, and the opportunity to make an impact in a traditionally male-driven industry. Though she has faced challenges, particularly in making her voice heard, she has built strong relationships by consistently demonstrating her skills, knowledge, and willingness to contribute.
AKD has been a significant part of her professional growth, offering opportunities to take on new challenges, pursue further education, and develop soft skills through programs like LEAD.
Kavitha sees gender diversity improving at AKD, with more women participating in leadership roles, Women in Trade initiatives, and graduate programs. “It’s encouraging to see AKD’s continued commitment to creating an inclusive environment where equal opportunities are a priority.”
Her advice to women entering the industry? “Stay confident in your skills and embrace every opportunity for growth. This industry may be traditionally male-driven, but your unique perspective is valuable. Seek mentorship, continue developing your skills, and don’t shy away from challenges – persistence and a strong support network will help you thrive.”
For Kavitha, International Women’s Day is a reminder of the progress made and the work still to be done in achieving gender equality. “It motivates me to uplift other women, drive change, and be a role model for my daughter. It also honours my mum’s journey as a woman, carrying forward her legacy to help create a future where every woman and girl can thrive.”
Janice McDonald – NSW Payroll Officer

For 45 years, Janice McDonald has been a vital part of AKD, serving as a Payroll Officer for the Tumut and Gilmore sites. Beyond ensuring employees are paid correctly and on time, she is the go-to person for payroll inquiries, site events, weighbridge operations, and a variety of administrative tasks that keep daily operations running smoothly.
Janice’s passion for administrative work and her connection to the local timber industry led her to this career. Over the years, she has seen firsthand how the industry has evolved, particularly for women. While traditionally male-dominated, she has always valued the strong sense of teamwork at AKD. “We work well together as a team,” she says, though she acknowledges the challenges women have faced, particularly around pay equity.
Her proudest moments come from knowing she has done her job well and helped others across the business. A standout experience for her was being recognised at the Lumber Legends celebration, which honours long-serving employees. “It was filled with laughter, shared memories, and a strong sense of camaraderie as we were thanked for our longevity with the company.”
Janice appreciates the support AKD has provided throughout her career, particularly in offering flexibility and family leave. She has also witnessed positive changes in gender diversity, with more women stepping into trade and leadership roles. “I’ve seen real progress, with women now working in our maintenance department as Fitters and Electricians. AKD has also been very supportive with family leave and flexibility, which has made a big difference in my career.”
Her advice to women looking to build a career in the industry? “Stay strong, be heard, and speak out.” She believes that persistence and confidence are key to making an impact in any role.
Taylor Towers – Victoria Sales & Service Manager

Starting as a Receptionist in 2011, Taylor Towers has built an impressive career at AKD, working her way through finance, sales, and now leading as Victoria Sales & Service Manager. In her current role, she continues to manage wholesale accounts while working closely with her team to ensure AKD delivers the best service possible to its customers.
Taylor was drawn to AKD because of its reputation and opportunities for growth. Over the years, she has taken on diverse roles, each one strengthening her skills and deepening her industry knowledge. However, breaking into the timber industry as a young woman wasn’t without its challenges. “When I started 13 years ago, the industry was heavily male-dominated, and I had to work twice as hard to prove my knowledge and abilities. At first, customers didn’t have confidence in me, assuming I was just there to answer the phone. Over time, they realised I was just as capable – if not more – and many began calling me directly for advice and support.”
One of the most rewarding aspects of Taylor’s role has been mentoring and supporting others, particularly young women entering the industry. “Mentoring and supporting others, especially young women in my team, has been incredibly rewarding. Watching them develop their skills, gain confidence, and thrive in what was once an all-male team makes me proud.”
Taylor has witnessed significant progress in gender diversity at AKD, with more women stepping into roles that were traditionally held by men. She has also benefited from AKD’s commitment to supporting its employees, particularly in providing flexibility that has allowed her to continue growing her career while raising a family.
Her advice to women looking to build a career in the industry? “Have confidence in yourself! Each day, we see more women joining not just AKD but the timber industry in general, proving we are just as capable.”
Rachel Scilley – National Freight & Logistics Manager

As AKD’s National Freight & Logistics Manager based in North Lakes, Rachel Scilley ensures timber is delivered safely and on time while managing compliance for AKD’s heavy vehicles and freight carriers. With a career that started in customer service, she has worked across multiple areas of the industry, now overseeing multimillion-dollar freight contracts.
Rachel’s journey into the timber industry began with a customer service role, where she quickly developed a passion for the sector. “I fell in love with all things timber. This industry offers such a diverse range of career opportunities, and I was lucky to have had some great mentors to help me along my journey.”
Freight and logistics have traditionally been male-dominated fields, but Rachel has navigated challenges with confidence. “Having faith in my abilities and proving my skills through my actions and results has helped me overcome any barriers.” She takes pride in the success of her team and values the collaborative environment that allows them to thrive.
One of the most fulfilling aspects of her career has been mentoring and supporting those around her. “The thing that makes me most proud about my work is the teams that help me do it – and then seeing them succeed.”
AKD has played a key role in Rachel’s professional growth, supporting her through further study and industry networking opportunities. She has also seen firsthand how AKD fosters an inclusive workplace.
Her advice to women considering a career in the industry? “Just go for it! There are so many pathways of opportunities if you have the desire to keep learning. I started in customer service, worked within the mill, and now manage multimillion-dollar freight contracts.”
Marina Milic – Technical Victorian Manager

Since joining AKD in 2018, Marina Milic has grown alongside the company’s expansion. What began as a site-based role in Colac has evolved into her current position as Victoria’s Technical Manager, where she works across multiple national sites, driving innovation in wood technology processes and industry advancements.
Marina’s passion for timber started at a young age, inspired by her grandfather, a joiner. She pursued a Bachelor of Wood Processing Engineering in Serbia, specialising in subjects ranging from wood anatomy to final stages of technologies of wood processing. In 2016, she made Australia her new home and was introduced to AKD through industry contacts. She sought a graduate position and was introduced to the technical team and industry by a highly knowledgeable professional.
“One of my proudest achievements is leading the FTIR project certification, making AKD the first mill to receive this accreditation. It’s rewarding to be part of a team that drives industry advancements.”
Beyond this, Marina has played a key role in pioneering preservative treatment certifications, improving timber durability practices, and converting Gilmore’s CCA plant to MCA. She actively contributes to industry committees focused on durability, AS Standards, and sustainability.
Her career growth has been shaped by valuable mentorship and a range of professional development opportunities, including training in timber design, leadership, and operational excellence – equipping her to lead and innovate within the industry.
“This industry is becoming more accessible for women, and I encourage other women to explore its diverse career paths, as this industry has great mentors to learn from.”
Tanya Carr – Caboolture Greenmill Operator

After a career change, Tanya Carr joined AKD as a Greenmill Operator and has been part of the team for the past two and a half years. Previously working in the meat industry, she was looking for a new challenge and found her place in timber manufacturing.
Tanya enjoys being part of a team that keeps production running smoothly, where everyone is always willing to help each other out. “I like being a part of a team that is willing to help,” she says, valuing the strong sense of camaraderie in the workplace.
One of the biggest challenges she faced was juggling shift work with two young children. “Juggling shift work with two young kids was challenging, but AKD supported me with a shift change, making it much easier to balance work and family life.”
She has also embraced opportunities to expand her skills, training on different machines to grow her capabilities. “AKD fosters an environment where you can speak up with confidence, knowing your concerns will be heard and acted upon.”
Looking ahead, Tanya is excited to continue learning and growing within the company. She appreciates the support AKD provides in developing new skills and is eager to take on new challenges as they arise. “There’s always something new to learn, and I look forward to seeing where this journey takes me.”
